Greenland

Either the largest island in the world, or the smallest continent, Greenland is held by Denmark. It was named by the Vikings, in an apparent attempt to attract settlers. Since the last of the Viking settlements in Greenland died out about 1500 years ago, the climate has changed, however, and it used to be much greener. This change in the islands climate is, in great part, actually believed to have contributed to the decline of the Viking settlements there. Currently, it fits it's name not at all.

Greenland is mostly under a blanket of ice and snow for the entire year - hardly green.

Greenland is a possession of Denmark.
