Colorado rises from the Central Plains in the eastern half of the state, and descends to the Great Basin in the west. Between the two lie the Rocky Mountains. These mountains form the spine of North America. Colorado is home to many continental habitats, from wide flatlands and deep canyonlands to alpine meadows and bare mountaintop rock.
