Between the wide expanses of the Arctic, and the tropical forests of Central America, lies this heterogeneous region of plains and prairies, mountains, swamps and deserts. Much of the region is devoted to agriculture, though there are still large areas of open land as well. A multitude of habitats are formed by the multitude of geographic features.
