The Indian Subcontinent
| BiologyBase | World Map |
Ranging from sea level to the highest point above the ocean (Mt. Everest), the Indian subcontinent houses a wide range of habitats. The affinities of the flora and fauna are a great mix with Africa, the Middle East, and southeast Asia all represented. It is also one of the most densely populated areas on earth, supporting over a fifth of the world human population.
The area was once part of Africa, which split off long ago and moved toward Asia. It is still moving north, pushing the Himalayan mountains ever higher.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the island nation of Sri Lanka and the mountain nation of Nepal are the countries of this region.
