Located in the Indian Ocean, just east of the southern African coast, this island has more endemic (unique to the area) organisms than any other similar sized location on the planet. In particular, it is the only place in the world where you can find lemurs - primates that are somewhat catlike in appearance. It's a really cool place.
Unfortunately, the Malagasy (the people of Madagascar) have cut more than 50% of the native vegetation for farms and living space. However, there are conservation and other scientific efforts underway to stop, or at least slow habitat destruction on the island.
