Turdus migratorius
l 10", ws 17", wt 2.7 oz Though not closely related to the also red-breasted European Robin from which it got it's name, our robin red-breast is a common bird of yard and garden. During winter they may congregate in great flocks, and stride across southern lawns looking for insects and other invertebrates to eat. If you watch these winter flocks carefully, you'll see that the birds each maintain a specific distance from one another, about twice the length of their body. The male American Robin had a darker head than the female. Most scientific work on the American Robin has been done in New York, and there are not a lot of stuides of how their natural history may differ around the continent. |
