American Kestrel

Falco sparverius

l 9", ws 22", wt 4.1 oz

Resident throughout the continental United States, and breeding throughout most of  North America south of the Arctic Circle.

North America's smallest falcon, the American Kestrel can often be seen along roadsides sitting on telephone wire or fences. They eat insects and small mammals, and can also be seen hovering over fields looking for prey.

Kestrels have been found to be able to see ultraviolet light, and can see the light sparkle from the urine trails that voles leave to mark their paths through the grass.
