American Coot

The American Coot is a member of the rail family. It can be frequently seen swimming alongside ducks at park ponds, though it tends not to beg food from people, since it eats primarily invertebrates rather than plant material.

The coot is overall black, with a light bill, the brightest color on the bird are the legs which are green. The toes are lobed, rather than webbed like a duck's. There is webbing on the toes, but it's incomplete, not meeting between the toes. This makes their footprints very distinctive.

American Coots are pretty common across most of the continent where ever there are freshwater lakes, ponds and streams.
