January 23rd - Round Valley Regional Preserve, Contra Costa County, California
| I
spent a nicely warmish afternoon walking the entrance trail to the
preserve. However, there was still ice on places in the creek.
The Preserve is the "newest" of the East Bay Regional Park district and probably one of the least known. From Clayton, go east on Marsh Creek Road about 13 miles to the park parking lot. There are restrooms there. Because it's so new, it's not on many maps yet. On a good topo map the area is simply called "Round Valley" and you'll find it east of Mt. Diablo State Park. Dogs are not permitted, because it's a preserve, but horses are. The area has been grazed for a couple hundred years, and appears to still be grazed in areas, at least. For the most part, the habitat is oak woodland with little understory. Beyond the Preserve entrance there are no facilities. |
