American Coot

The coot is overall black, with a light bill, the brightest color on the bird are the legs which are a muddy olive green. The toes are lobed, rather than webbed like a duck's. There is webbing on the toes, but it's incomplete, not meeting between the toes. This makes their footprints very distinctive.

American Coots are pretty common across most of the continent where ever there are freshwater lakes, ponds and streams.

Might be confused with the Common Moorhen, which has a red-orange bill.
