Recurvirostra americana
l 18", ws 31", wt 11 oz The American Avocet can is a bird of marsh and muddy shore. Often seen along the edges, using it's long up-curved bill to skim the surface of the water, mud or plants for small invertebrates. Their rusty red heads of breeding season birds make them easily distinguishable from the only other bird in their range with an up-curved bill, the Black-necked Stilt. During the non-breeding season they have white or pale gray heads. |
